The indisputable facts
A few facts and figures illustrate the importance of using a powerful personal finance curriculum in the classroom right now.

The baby boomer generation has earned more than any previous generation. However, the average baby boomer will have less than $50,000 in savings apart from home equity according to the Federal Reserve Board's Survey of Consumer Finances for 2007. The only explanation is that they failed to plan and manage their personal finances.

The findings of the 2008 Financial Literacy Survey of adults, conducted on behalf of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Inc. and MSN Money, affirms that one in every ten Americans with a mortgage reports they were either late on mortgage payments or missing one. Seven percent of adults with mortgage reports are either getting calls from collectors or seriously considering filing for bankruptcy.

The survey also found that more than one-third of adults do not have any non-retirement savings, and more than one-quarter are currently not saving for their retirement. Learning about personal finance is even more important for today's teens, so they don't end up in the same situation.

More than half of all Americans believe their income will fail to keep pace with inflation. Only 14 percent of teens have taken a personal finance class in school, and 69 percent of teens said whatever they know about personal finance, they learned from their parents. But the anomaly is only 34 percent of parents have ever taught their teen how to balance a checkbook, and only 29 percent have explained how credit cards work.

With 93 percent of American parents thinking that their teens will make some financial missteps in one form or another, the majority agree on one point: the importance of personal financial literacy for today's teens. But when it comes to systematically teaching the concepts of budgeting, saving, and investment to their teens, more than two-thirds of parents don't know where to start, what to teach or how to teach.
