Kansas State Standards for Personal Finance
The Kansas State Standards set a benchmark for educational excellence, inspiring teachers to help students achieve greater academic success. According to new Consumer Education Standards set for 2009-10 and beyond, teachers will help Kansas students achieve greater financial success as well. Give the current state of the economy, Kansas State Standards, like other state curriculum requirements, have been affected by the need to provide quality programs to improve financial literacy. The Kansas State Standards require core curriculum that will prepare those in grades 9 to 12 for the financial responsibilities they will face in adulthood.
Schools across the country are making personal finance education a regular course of study, considering its importance to the future life success of students and our nation's economic prosperity. The Kansas Department of Education has added personal finance requirements to the Kansas State Standards specifically to ensure that educational materials for personal finance, consumer education and life skills align with its goals for financial literacy. By adding personal finance requirements to consumer education and/or math, teachers will be required to implement curriculum rich in content for these subject areas.
The necessity of these changes to Kansas State Standards is illustrated by statistics regarding the irresponsible or non-existent spending, saving and retirement planning of many Americans. More than a third of adults have no non-retirement savings, and 75 percent of American adults believe that inflation will grow more quickly than their income, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling's 2008 Financial Literacy Survey of Adults. Only 20 percent of parents involve their teenage children in family budgeting and spending decisions. Only 49 percent of parents teach their children basic budgeting, according to the Charles Schwab Parents & Money Survey of 2008. This does not bode well for the future of their children unless financial literacy education takes place in schools.
